The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555 called to strike Sunday in a news release. The announcement comes after 15 month of labour talks.
All about the Fred Meyer:
According to the union, negotiations have focused on salaries and pay inequities. The boycott marks the Union’s first economic move, as negotiations grow increasingly tense.
Fred Meyer employs approximately 18,000 employees in over 50 stores throughout the country, including seven in Clark County.
When Fred Meyer will not listen to the employees’ voices, they must listen to the sound of shoppers-empty shops, said Jeff Anderson, the union’s president and treasurer.
Earlier this month the union filed unfair labour-practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board against the supermarket chain. The complaints state that managers held one-on-one meetings with employees without proper representation, advertised job openings as a tool of coercion for temporary workers and tried to persuade members to leave the union.
Earlier, Jeffery Temple, Fred Meyer’s spokesman, told The Daily News many of the claims were “untrue and misleading.”
The union rescinded its relations with Fred Meyer’s parent company, Kroger, earlier this month. The cancelation was effective Sunday.
A further round of discussions is scheduled for Thursday and Friday. Based on the press release, an update from the union is expected Saturday.
